W.M. KECK MENTORSHIP AWARD WINNERS 2024
The Office of Academic Affairs has established three mentorship awards through support from the W.M. Keck Foundation. These mentorship Awards have been established to recognize extraordinary mentorship activities that go above and beyond regular advising, for example by developing new mentoring initiatives, assisting those that face significant challenges or are vulnerable, or creating new pathways for growth and empowerment. The recipients receive a monetary award of $1,500 for mentoring or advising activities.
Mentoring Undergraduate Students
Lakshmi Krishna, Physics
Dr. Lakshmi Krishna makes an impact with her dedication to mentoring undergraduates. She does so with compassion, inclusiveness, and kindness. Through her encouragement, Dr. Krishna helps students to expand their perceptions of themselves and allows them to do things they never thought capable. Sr. Krishna is excited for student’s success and genuinely cares about them and the experiences they have at Mines. She is a passionate advisor and mentor that takes time to get to know students, check in on them regularly, and encourage them to greatness.
Mentoring Graduate Students
Anne Silverman, Mechanical Engineering
Professor Anne Silverman has not only advised to completion approximately 15 MS-thesis and PHD students, she has also garnered three prestigious NSF Graduate Research Fellowships amongst them. Professor Silverman ensures that the PhD students publish, on average, more than three papers in high-quality journals each and get placed in prestigious positions in research organizations and industry after graduating.
Mentoring Faculty/Staff
Luis Tenorio, Applied Mathematics and Statistics
Dr. Luis Tenorio goes out of his way to make sure incoming faculty have a smooth transition settling in at Mines and in the Denver area. He has been instrumental in helping the development of fellow faculty in the department. Luis makes time to review papers, provide feedback, and share insight to help others improve. Luis’ sense of purpose to help younger faculty is made manifest through his active involvement on campus and the scientific community alike. Luis is an excellent mentor and has played a critical role in the success of several newer AMS faculty members.
